Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene Announces Rebuild Day in Independence Heights Partnering with Rebuilding Together Houston

HOUSTONJan. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene (“Gary Greene“) today announced its continued partnership with Rebuilding Together Houston to provide no-cost critical home repairs in the Independence Heights neighborhood for homeowners in need. The area was struck hard by Hurricane Harvey and our volunteers are committed to help in the long-term recovery efforts.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the wonderful volunteers from Gary Greene in Independence Heights for the second year in a row,” said Christine Holland, CEO and Executive Director of Rebuilding Together Houston. “Independence Heights is a special community that was hit hard by Hurricane Harvey, and we need as many volunteers as possible to get our neighbors back into their homes.”

On January 30, through the Gary Greene Realtor Foundation, Gary Greene volunteers will spend the day repairing up to nine homes in Houston’s Independence Heights neighborhood.  Led by Rebuilding Together Houston, volunteers will complete exterior repairs to help keep the elements and pests out of the homes: replace siding, scrape and paint, and clean up yards. These are much-needed improvements for residents whose homes make up the historic Independence Heights community. Our partnership with Rebuilding Together Houston fits perfectly with Gary Greene’s “Changing Lives, One Home at a Time” mission, in addition to our longer-term community efforts.

Gary Greene shares Rebuilding Together’s vision of providing a safe and healthy home for every person,” said Mark Woodroof, Managing Partner of Gary Greene. “Our volunteers are dedicated to being part of the organization’s Houston efforts in Independence Heights that help homeowners with much needed repairs to keep a house feeling like a home.”

About Rebuilding Together Houston

Rebuilding Together Houston impacts the lives of hundreds of families across Harris County annually by providing free home repairs for low-income elderly, U.S. Military Veterans, and people with disabilities.  Since 1982, we have reinvested more than $120 million in affordable housing throughout Harris County.  Through the work of caring volunteers and licensed contractors, and with the support of individual donors, local businesses and corporate partners, Rebuilding Together Houston revitalizes Houston communities, providing safe and healthy housing for neighbors in need.

About Independence Heights

As the first African American municipality in the State of Texas, Independence Heights holds a special place in history and is proud of its heritage. A few senior residents still remember when it only had a few dirt lanes with pockets of grass, except for avenues where the trolley car edged into their community.

With its proximity to downtown, many are worried that if a homeowner falls behind on maintenance and payments and is forced to move, upscale developers will move in and build expensive houses that Independence Heights residents cannot afford, displacing them from their community. Instead, the goal of the Independence Heights Redevelopment Council is to see that homes are repaired, maintaining affordable housing, that additional community spaces are built, and area property taxes kept low so that the families who have lived there for generations can remain.
