City of Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka to Host the Shani Baraka Women’s Resource Center Memorial Festival

NEWARK, N.J.Aug. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — As the City of Newark’s Mayor Ras J. Baraka stands for women’s rights, safety, health and wellness, which can all be compromised with what’s going on in Washington, DC, it is extremely important to him to support the population who critically needs services. In effort to raise awareness about the recently opened agency that acts as a one-stop center for women in crisis, Mayor Baraka will host the upcoming Shani Baraka Women’s Resource Center Memorial Festival being held on Friday, August 11, 2017  from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., located at 300 Clinton Avenue, Newark NJ 07112.

The festival will bring attention to the center’s work to empower women in need, while drawing families together to celebrate the life of the highly esteemed Newark woman who the center is named after, Ms. Shani Baraka, the Mayor’s beloved sister who lost her life as a result of domestic violence.

The day will consist of a high school 3-on-3 basketball tournament refereed by Mayor Baraka, live jazz, deejay, spoken word poetry, children’s activities, workshops, and health screenings; all free and open to the public.

ABOUT THE SHANI BARAKA WOMEN’S RESOURCE CENTER:
Since its May 2017 opening, the Shani Baraka Women’s Resource Center continues its mission to empower women and their families in crisis and transition; to achieve safe, healthy, and self-sufficient lives by providing support, education, counseling, information, and services in a safe environment. This state of the art, multi-faceted agency, which is run by the City of Newark, was developed in honor of the late Shani Baraka, a victim of domestic violence and the dear sister of Mayor Ras J. Baraka.
