DDSB invites future educators to interview for a spot on the supply list.

On August 28 and 29, the recruitment sector of Human Resource Services in the Durham District School Board (DDSB) conducted on-site interviews for the occasional roster (supply list).

Over 550 candidates filled the hallways and interview rooms of the Education Centre in Whitby, preparing to launch their careers in teaching. Retired DDSB principals conducted approximately 200 interviews per day, searching for the best candidates to fill spaces on the supply list.

HR Recruitment Manager Arlene Walkes spoke about some of the reasons candidates gave for wanting to work for the DDSB. “Candidates stated that they are attracted to the professional development opportunities that the DDSB offers.” Last year the DDSB partnered with the Elementary Teacher’s Federation of Ontario (ETFO) to offer 50 workshops for occasional teachers.

“Candidates also mentioned the diversity and equity initiatives that the DDSB continues to support,” explains Walkes.

Rosemary Pyke, a supply list hopeful, says that she wants to work for the DDSB because she “loves the outlook of the board and their push for diversity…I like how the DDSB brings the community into the classroom.”

This is the first year that HR Recruitment has run a Supply Teacher Career Fair of this size. Walkes says HR Recruitment will continue their efforts to hire for supply lists to support DDSB schools.
