Dominica’s ruling party wins 4th consecutive term; opposition gains 3 seats

Dominica Labour Party

ROSEAU _ Dominica’s ruling party has won a fourth consecutive term following parliamentary elections in the tiny eastern Caribbean island.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says he is humbled by the re-election after his Labor Party won 15 of 21 parliamentary seats. Preliminary election results show that the opposing United Workers Party increased its seats from three to six.

Skerrit said his administration will dedicate more resources to eliminating poverty and improving education. He had announced wage increases of up to 5 per cent for public workers a few days before Monday’s elections. In addition, he previously pledged to also build up infrastructure and lure foreign investment to the island of some 72,000 people.
