Gov’t Committed to Improving Sports Infrastructure – Grange

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, says the Government is committed to improving the country’s sports infrastructure.

“We want to ensure that we have the right infrastructure in place so that our young talent can have the right facilities, so they can train and from an early age get the right direction and right development,” she said.

Ms. Grange was addressing the launch of the 2017 Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) Basic Schools Athletics Championship at the National Stadium on Monday (June 12).

Some 60 schools are slated to compete in the event, which will be held at the National Stadium from June 14-16.

Ms. Grange said the event is important in unearthing athletic talent at the earliest stage.

She noted that the country has enjoyed tremendous success in track and field as a result of the structured approach to physical education at the early childhood, primary and high school levels.

For his part, Deputy Chairman, INSPORTS, Newton Amos, said the event will target students from ages three to six years.

He noted that involvement in sports is important to the total development of children, helping to build team spirit, social harmony and fostering a sense of belonging.

He said that research has shown that students involved in sports at an early age display improved balance and coordination; improved personal and social skills; and greater self-confidence, cooperation and leadership.

He noted that sports will continue to play a critical role in the country’s social, cultural and economic development.

Mr. Amos said the organisers of the Basic Schools Athletics Championship are expecting exceptional performances from the participants “and no doubt, we will see remarkable talent showcased in a spirit of camaraderie and rivalry.”
