Gunmen open fire on motorcade by Jamaica opposition party

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Police say gunmen have opened fire on a campaign motorcade by Jamaica’s main opposition party and killed one man as it travelled through a troubled neighbourhood.

Investigators say three others were wounded by gunfire in the Jamaica Labor Party motorcade. About 12 cars also were damaged by hurled rocks.

The violence occurred in Flankers, an impoverished community in northern Jamaica that has historically been a reliable source of votes for Labor.

In a Wednesday police statement, Senior Superintendent Steve McGregor said political organizers had been told not to send campaign motorcades there due to recent violence.

Two men from Flankers were killed late Sunday when gunfire broke out at a Labor rally in nearby Montego Bay.

Jamaica will hold general elections Feb. 25.
