GEORGETOWN, Guyana _ Authorities in Guyana are investigating reports that a Venezuelan military helicopter landed in the South American country amid a border dispute between the two nations.

Military chief of staff Brig. Gen. Mark Phillips tells the Associated Press that the helicopter carrying several armed soldiers landed in Guyana’s western region. He said Friday that the soldiers spoke briefly with residents and left when told they were not in the location they sought.

Phillips said he has pictures of the helicopter that landed on Wednesday and that he has reported the incident to the government.

Venezuela has long claimed 40 per cent of Guyana’s territory.
