Increased Focus on Intelligence in Addressing Crime – PM

The Jamaica Defence Force’s (JDF) training capabilities have been boosted with the establishment of its Directorate of Training and Doctrine.

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, formally opened the facility located at the JDF headquarters at Up Park Camp, Kingston, on June 14.

Developed with support from the Government of Canada’s Military Training and Cooperation Programme (MTCP), the facility, is outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment and a lecture theatre.

The Directorate will serve as the repository of information and standards across the JDF and regional militaries utilising the local training facility.

It will streamline training programmes delivered by the JDF’s five Centres of Excellence.

These are the Caribbean Military Aviation School at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston; Caribbean Military Maritime Training Centre at the JDF Coast Guard base in Port Royal; Technical Training Institute at Up Park Camp; Military Training Wing in Newcastle, St. Andrew; and Caribbean Junior Command and Staff College in Moneague, St. Ann.

The Prime Minister, in his remarks, lauded the JDF’s exemplary leadership and support personnel, and thanked the Canadian Government “for having the confidence to continue to invest in Jamaica”.

“The progress in this partnership that this centre represents will see not only the ongoing development of our international partnerships but also serve to enhance the Government’s efforts to positively impact the nation’s youth as we strive to continue in our growth and development efforts,” he said.

Canadian High Commissioner to Jamaica, His Excellency Sylvain Fabí, said the establishment of the Directorate is a milestone in the security relationship between Jamaica and Canada.

He said he anticipated further strengthening of cooperation among the countries in this area.

Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Rocky Meade, for his part, said the Directorate represents a continuation of Canada’s support to building the capacity of the JDF, and to enhance the force’s ability to deliver training.
