Inquest into the Death of Michael Benoit Announced

Dr. James Edwards, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Toronto East Office, today announced that an inquest will be held into the death of Michael Benoit.

Mr. Benoit, 45, died on Feb. 12, 2015, while incarcerated at the Toronto South Detention Centre. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the events surrounding Mr. Benoit’s death.  The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last five days and to hear from approximately eight witnesses.

The inquest will commence at 9:30 a.m. on March 20, 2017 at the Forensic Services and Coroners Complex, Court Rm. B, 25 Morton Shulman Ave., Toronto. Dr. Roger Skinner will preside as inquest coroner and Patrick Travers will serve as coroner’s counsel.
