Jamaica police order probe into death of prisoner accused of killing officer

Carl Williams

KINGSTON, Jamaica(AP) _ Jamaica‘s police chief has ordered an investigation into the death of a prisoner accused of killing a female officer.

Carl Williams said in a statement Saturday that 29-year-old Marlon Cherrington received serious injuries. He did not elaborate.

Cherrington is accused in the July 14 killing of policewoman Crystal Thomas. Authorities said Thomas was boarding a public bus after work when she encountered a robbery in progress and confronted the men. She was fatally shot.

Williams said Cherrington’s death highlights the need for additional measures to improve conditions at jails including the installation of closed-circuit video cameras. He said he also expects to meet with human rights representatives to improve the treatment of detainees.
