Morgan Heritage Lights Up Manhattan
New York, New York — August 2013 — While the sun beamed on the lower Manhattan streets, a stellar event was shaping within the walls of the legendary SOB’s concert venue. Way before doors opened, a line of anxious Reggae revelers formed. As the swank venue filled to capacity, a heightened celebratory spirit overcame the growing crowd on this special night of Jamaica’s 51st Independence. And topping off the excitement was an explosive acoustic performance by Reggae’s Regal family, Morgan Heritage, in celebration of their new album “Here Come the Kings.” The event, produced by Destine Xposure, was quite a success, filling SOB’s to capacity.
DJ Roy of Road International and Irie Jam Radio set the ‘Independence’ tone for the event, commencing with Jamaica’s national anthem, which the audience sang verbatim. He later laced the venue with moving songs, building up to the concert. There were immense vibes when the young Jemere Morgan, son of Gramps Morgan, delighted fans with his crystal clear voice on selections like “Neighborhood Girl” and “International Love.” This younger Morgan member, also blessed with an abundance of talent, won over the swollen crowd early on.
Following Jemere’s set, all eyes were on an up-close-and-personal Morgan Heritage video interview, which zoomed into the group’s background and upbringing in their Brooklyn neighbourhood. When Morgan Heritage members Gramps, Peetah, Mojo, Luke and Una took center stage, the crowd roared in excitement. No time was wasted as the harmonious group launched a sensational, unplugged acoustic set. A series of new songs, classics and conversations with the audience were a major hit. In perfect fashion, the regal family belted out anthems like “Down by the River,” “Don’t Haffi Dread” and “Tell Me How Come.” Of course, as this was their official release party for “Here Come the Kings,” a number of great new songs from the album were performed, including “Perfect Love Song” and “Ends Nah Meet,” among others. Peetah wooed the crowd with ‘Perfect’ lead vocals on “Perfect Love Song,” while Gramps contributed his super defined Barritone voice to this selection and many others. The group’s legendary father Denroy Morgan viewed the performance with pride.
Morgan Heritage provided fans with a night of musical elegance. It’s no doubt that after this impeccable acoustic set, fans rushed to cop the new album. At one point during the set, Peetah Morgan sincerely discussed Reggae music’s often lack of support by the industry. He went on to say that the phrase “reggae revival” has become very popular, but asked emphatically, “How can one revive something that was never dead?” The chock-full SOB’s was a true indicator that Morgan Heritage is a Reggae force to be reckoned with. Notably, among the scores of fans in attendance, were many of the Reggae Music industry’s movers and shakers, including Randy Chin of VP Records, Shane Brown of Juke Boxx Records and loads of other industry hot shots and personalities.
