News Flash: Brian Sykes To Be Sworn In As Chief Justice … March 1, 2018 …

Despite public outcry and pressure to permanently appoint Sykes as Chief Justice, the Prime Minister Andrew Michael Holness will do tomorrow at his own pace.  This is 29 days since Sykes’ acting appointment was made on February 1, 2018.

Daggers Drawn

You will recall that daggers were drawn at the throat of the PM by activist judges who withheld their services for a day to pressure Holness to appoint Sykes.  The PM was not phased and defended his position to ask the Chief Justice to act.

Constitutional

Section 99:1 gave Holness solid legal ground tp stand on., We at Vision Newspaper stood by Holness and wrote strong editorials to support our position.  We realized from day one that the conduct of Holness was contitutional and he should not bow to any pressure to act before he was ready to so permanently make the appointment.

Noise

Senator Ransford Braham, a noted jurist speaking in the Senate last Friday affirmed stridently that Holness was on solid legal footing in his application of the law.  He urged the government to ignore the “noise” coming from strange quarters regarding the decision to ask Sykes to act as Chief Justice.

We wish Hon. Justice Sykes, Chief Justice designate all the success.
