Appointment of Bryan Sykes … Acting Chief Justice

The Opposition Leader said inter alia that “When I learned of the temporary nature of the appointment,  I objected and cautioned the PM. It has clear implications for the performance of the acting Chief Justice. This decision is without precedent in the Caribbean and Commonwealth. This is interference in the independence of the judiciary. For the record it should be noted that I was consulted by the Prime Minister on the appointment of Sykes.”

This could impair the performance of the Chief Justice. Could it Dr. Phillips?

“It is carrying us down the slope of political interference. The framers of our Constitution promoted judicial independence. In the 55 years of Independence there has never been an acting appointment of a Chief Justice.” The

PM Holness Responds …

“It is actions that will determine his appointment as Chief Justice … PM Holness. “Many have the luxury of criticizing … I have a country to run”  Asserted a strident PM. … as he responded to his critics.

Jacqueline Cummings Gordon, a lawyer said “Chief Justice Bryan Sykes is erudite and he delivers justice in a timely manner … his integrity stan/tun up”

Jacqueline Samuels Brown said she has planned to deliver a letter to the PM today.

          Ode To Legality

The PM is head of the Executive
His action is administrative …
Holness acted with dispatch …
He did not sit by and watch …

No one can accuse him of over reach …
The Constitution he did not breach …
As Section 99:1 did teach …
Holness’ conduct was legally fit
Alas!  Mainly legal reaction … is a misfit …

Who is trying to contaminate Sykes’ appointment?
This is quite a disappointment …
Phillips was taken in confidence
Did Phillips breach confidence?

Did he stab Holness in the back? By his disclosure … an unholy whack …?
Let us hear from you Phillips …
You are not known to seal your lips …

There is still separation of power
Do not confuse this as cover
Chief Judge is his own man …
And will not be swayed by even Satan …
