SAG AWARDS – DIVERSITY

Idris Elba - SAG AWARDS

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Now that wasn’t so hard, was it? After a couple of weeks of the Academy Awards being blasted for their lack of diversity, two other sets of entertainment awards managed to give awards to a several performers of colour on Saturday. The Screen Actors Guild bestowed acting honours to Queen Latifah, Uzo Aduba, Viola Davis and to Idris Elba, who won two SAGs. The same evening, Nate Parker’s drama about Nat Turner’s slave rebellion finished off its dominance at the Sundance Film Festival. “The Birth of a Nation” swept through the domestic cinema awards. The honours came days after the movie was bought by Fox Searchlight for a record auction price. By contrast, for the second straight year, the Oscars feature an all-white slate of acting nominations.
