The Latest: Wawrinka leads Tsonga 2 1 in sets in their French Open semifinal

PARIS _ 4:10 p.m.

Stan Wawrinka was one set away from the French Open final after edging a tight third set 7-6 (3) against home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Wawrinka won the first set 6-3 and Tsonga took the second 7-6 (1) in hot conditions on Court Chartrier.

The winner plays top-ranked Novak Djokovic or third-seeded Andy Murray. They are up next.

4:00 p.m.

Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic remains on course to become the first woman in 15 years to win the singles and doubles at the French Open.

Safarova teamed with Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States to beat Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to reach the doubles final.

Safarova plays top-ranked Serena Williams in the singles final on Saturday.

The last to do the double was Frenchwoman Mary Pierce in 2000, when she played alongside Martina Hingis.

Serena Williams is skipping practice the day before the French Open women’s final, and will not conduct a news conference, either.

She meets first-time finalist Lucie Safarova on Saturday.

Williams has been sick for several days, and was listless in the heat during her semifinal victory on Thursday, then did not hold a post-match news conference, saying she went to the tournament doctor.

With temperatures reaching 90 degrees (32 C) on Court Chartrier for the French Open men’s semifinal, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga found a novel way to keep cool.

He laid on a fridge to sooth his shoulder muscle.

He and Stan Wawrinka are into the third set, at one set all, with both looking to reach their second Grand Slam final.

2:53 p.m.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won the second set 7-6 (1) against Stanislas Wawrinka to level the set score in their French Open semifinal.

The fans on Court Chartrier broke out into loud chants of “Tsonga, Tsonga” after the Frenchman broke back in the set and held to love to lead 5-4.

With his eyes closed, Tsonga appeared to be meditating at the changeover.

In high temperatures, Wawrinka won the first set 6-3.

2:05 p.m.

For the first time at Roland Garros, there will be an all-American final in the French Open boys tournament.

Second-seeded Taylor Fritz reached the final Friday with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Corentin Denolly and will take on Tommy Paul for the title.

The 13th-seeded Paul defeated Michael Mmoh, another American player, 6-4, 6-3.

There were also two American players in the boys’ final last year at Wimbledon.

Stanislas Wawrinka has won the first set 6-3 against home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in their French Open semifinal.

The eighth-seeded Swiss broke Tsonga in the fourth game, and served out.
