TLC Reunites for “Waterfalls” Performance at 2013 American Music Awards With Help of Lil Mama

Still groovin! 18 years after TLC’s “Waterfalls” made its debut and catapulted up the charts in 1995, the girl group proved they were still relevant during their surprise performance at the 2013 American Music Awards.

Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas were joined on stage by Lil Mama, who took the place of the late Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes, who died tragically in a Honduran car accident in 2002. As the group took to the stage wearing ethereal white outfits, reminiscent of their days coordinating back in the ‘90s, the audience roared in response as viewers registered that the performers were about to deliver their hit single “Waterfalls.”

In fluid choreographed movement, the singers brought pizzazz back to those who remembered TLC’s height nearly two decades ago. “Waterfalls,” which was released in 1995, is best remembered for its music video, which tackled many issues including the illegal drug trade and the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The performance at Sunday’s AMAs follows the October 2013 release of the VH1 biopic CrazySexyCool, which follows the smash girl group’s entrance into the music industry after their debut album Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip. At the NYC premiere of their film on Oct. 15, Chilli told Us Weekly, “Crazy, sexy, cool is really a version of all women — because we all have those sides, I believe.”
