604 Records Signs Soul Music Sensation Tonye Aganaba
Debut Single “Villain” Out February 10th
604 Records, one of the most successful record labels in Canada co-founded by prominent entertainment lawyer, artist manager, president and co-founder Jonathan Simkin and Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger has announced the newest addition to their roster, Tonye. “I knew I wanted to sign Tonye the first time I heard her sing,” says Jonathan Simkin. “Ironically I was at the performance because I was interested in the act that Tonye was opening for. But once I heard her sing, my focus completely changed to signing her! I love her voice, but I also love that her music is such a fascinating mix of retro elements and modern elements. There is something very classic soul about her music, but then there is something that also sounds very current. I am very excited about what the future holds for her.”
As the go-to feature singer for Vancouver’s EDM producers and DJs for years, Tonye’s soulful, powerful voice has always stood out from the pack. She has enjoyed numerous successful live concert touring stints over the years as a featured vocalist with The Funkhunters along with Chali 2na (Jurassic Five, Ozomatli), and from playing all of the most popular West Coast Canadian festivals including Shorefest, Squamish Valley Festival, and Vancouver Island Music Fest, all of which gave her a chance to carve out a unique style all of her own. Given her live concert prowess and buzz in the music community, Paquin Artists Agency recently jumped at the opportunity to sign Tonye. “Paquin Artists Agency is honoured to add another powerful female voice to our artist roster,” says agent Grant Paley. “Tonye has without a doubt established herself as a premier talent out of the West coast music scene and we look forward to being a part of her development on the national circuit”.
Signed to 604 Records after releasing two solo indie projects, Tonye’s sound can be best described as electronic-spiked R&B/soul that will either make you want to dance or sing – or do both simultaneously. Her first single “Villain” will be released on Feb. 10th and was produced by Kevin Maher (Carly Rae Jepsen, Kat Von D) also known as Kevvy Mental of Fake Shark. Coming fresh off a bunch of 2016 tour dates with The Funkhunters, Tonye will be playing spot solo promo dates throughout the country to promote her forthcoming single, including Feb 11th at the Song & Surf Festival in Port Renfrew, BC,Toronto’s Black Arts & Innovation Expo on February 25th and Mar 5th at the Imperial Theatre for the Together We Can Fundraiser. Tonye is currently putting the finishing touches on her Villain EP set for release in the summer of 2017.
