Minister Hussen Pays Tribute to Basketball Legend Dikembe Mutombo

Toronto, Canada – In a heartfelt tweet, Canada’s Minister of International Development, Ahmed Hussen, expressed his condolences following the passing of basketball icon and humanitarian Dikembe Mutombo. Hussen hailed Mutombo not only for his extraordinary contributions to basketball but also for his relentless efforts to give back to Africa.

“Dikembe Mutombo was a global ambassador for the game of basketball, but he never stopped giving back to Africa,” Hussen wrote in a post on September 30, 2024.

Hussen further reflected on a memorable moment when students in the Youth Success Workshops (YSW) program were given the opportunity to meet the towering legend during a celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life. The event was one of many where Mutombo’s generosity and leadership shone, as he inspired young people not just to aim for greatness in sports, but also in community service and leadership.

Mutombo, known for his philanthropic efforts through the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, focused much of his life after basketball on improving healthcare, education, and quality of life in African nations, particularly in his home country of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Hussen’s message resonated with many in Canada and globally, as Mutombo’s legacy extended far beyond the court. The towering center was celebrated not only for his shot-blocking skills but for his commitment to uplifting marginalized communities.

Mutombo’s passing marks the loss of one of the world’s most influential athletes, whose dedication to humanity will continue to inspire future generations.
