Angela Brown Burke Wins As PNP Elects First Female Chair After 83 Years

Mrs. Angela Brown Burke has created history by becoming the first female chair of the PNP the 83 year old opposition (political) party in Jamaica. She defeated the acting chairman, Mr. Horace Dally, a Former MP and government minister in at least two previous People’s National Party (PNP) cabinets. Under PM Portia Simpson Miller was the latest which ended in 2016 when the Andrew Holness led Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) swept to power. For example Dally was a former health minister. The votes were as follows: Dr. Angela Brown Burke is a former Vice President of the PNP… got 147 votes. Mr. Horace Dally got 121 votes. A total of 268 votes were cast. Three hundred & twelve (312) delegates were eligible to vote.

Horace Dally Gets Appointment

Horace Dally ex pro tem as an experienced Officer. Dally was appointed to a newly created position on the executive.  The annual conference had adopted a resolution placed on the agenda that was put forward by president Mark Golding, which empowers the president to co-opt experienced members to the executive.

Brown Burke Responds

The newly minted female chair of the 83 year old Opposition PNP has responded to her historic win over the weekend of the 31st October 2021 in Manchester, central Jamaica, at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting. The NEC is the highest decision making body outside the annual conference. Ironically,  Burke is from the Peter Bunting faction  “Rise United.”  Burke said inter alia:

“My focus will be on allowing all to have a voice at all levels of the party. For the past 40+ years I have worked for this party.”
