Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne has instructed the Ministry of Health to acquire vaccines for the highly contagious Monkeypox disease that has already infected thousands of people worldwide.

Residents could be required to take another vaccine soon.  More than 16,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported across more than 70 countries so far this year.

Monkeypox is a disease caused by the monkeypox virus which is similar to the small pox virus.  Persons typically experience a fever, a rash, swollen lymph nodes and muscle pain.

Monkeypox is spread from person-to-person by direct contact with the rash and bodily fluids.  Clothing, sheets, towels and other objects can also be sources of infection.

The virus is also transmitted from a pregnant mother to her unborn child.  Respiratory secretions can also be a source of infection.  Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
