🇧🇧 Barbados Launches BiMPay National Instant Payments Platform
Barbados BiMPay will enable instant digital payments, helping businesses and consumers move money faster and more efficiently.
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Barbados has taken a major step toward a more digital economy with the launch of BiMPay, a new national instant payments platform designed to make transferring money faster, easier, and more accessible for businesses and consumers across the island.
The platform was officially launched at the Central Bank of Barbados on June 12, marking what Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley described as a transformational moment in the way money moves throughout the country.
“At 11:59 last night, Barbados changed the road on which money travels,” Mottley said during the launch.
The Prime Minister noted that the first transaction processed through the new system was intentionally directed to a small Barbadian business, highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of digital transformation reach entrepreneurs and everyday citizens.
A New Era for Digital Payments
BiMPay is Barbados’ national instant payments platform, enabling real-time electronic transfers between participating financial institutions.
Unlike traditional banking transactions that may take hours or even days to clear, BiMPay allows funds to move almost instantly, providing users with faster access to their money and improving the efficiency of everyday transactions.
The system is expected to support consumers, businesses, and financial institutions by offering secure, round-the-clock payment capabilities.
Supporting Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs
According to Mottley, BiMPay was designed with ordinary Barbadians and small business operators in mind.
“BiMPay is for the vendor, the farmer, the hairdresser, the taxi operator, the mechanic and every Barbadian seeking a faster way to do business.”
The platform is expected to make it easier for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to accept digital payments, improve cash flow, and reduce reliance on physical cash.
Officials believe the system will help create a more inclusive financial environment while expanding access to modern payment services across the economy.

Partnerships Behind the Project
The launch of BiMPay was made possible through collaboration between the Central Bank of Barbados, participating financial institutions, international development partners, and technology providers.
Mottley thanked Central Bank Governor Kevin Greenidge, the Central Bank team, the World Bank, and Montran, a global payments technology company, for their roles in bringing the project to fruition.
The initiative reflects Barbados’ broader commitment to digital transformation and modernizing key economic infrastructure.
Strengthening Financial Inclusion
Financial experts view instant payments systems as an important tool for promoting financial inclusion and economic efficiency.
By enabling secure and immediate transactions, platforms such as BiMPay can reduce transaction costs, improve convenience, and support greater participation in the formal financial system.
The launch also positions Barbados among a growing number of countries embracing digital payments technology to support economic growth and innovation.
Looking Ahead
For Barbados, BiMPay represents more than a technological upgrade—it is part of a larger vision for a modern, connected, and competitive economy.
As adoption expands among consumers and businesses, policymakers hope the platform will create new opportunities for entrepreneurship, commerce, and economic participation.
“This is what modern infrastructure feels like,” Mottley said. “Tonight, money moved, and tomorrow, opportunity must move with it.”
The launch signals a new chapter in Barbados’ digital transformation journey and underscores the country’s efforts to build an economy that is faster, more efficient, and more accessible for all.
