BARONESS SCOTLAND RETAINS HER SEAT AS COMMONWEALTH SG

Baroness Scotland Commonwealth Secretary General

June 24, 2022 | By Colin O. Jarrett | Baroness Scotland, QC will remain in her position as Secretary General of the Commonwealth. In a vote of 27-24, Senator Kamina Johnson-Smith from Jamaica lost the race in the vote for the position at the Conference of the Heads of Government in Kigali, Rwanda this morning (June 24, 2022).

Johnson-Smith thanked all the countries and people who supported her in the journey. She further informed that if she didn’t pull through, God wasn’t ready for her to leave Jamaica yet..

Johnson-Smith’s entry into the race had spurred criticism from some Caribbean Community, CARICOM states including Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne who had called her candidature a “monumental error” commenting that it risks dividing the regional group that has given overwhelming support to Scotland for a second term.

Scotland’s leadership has been under the microscope since it was revealed that she had circumvented the customary competitive tendering requirement by awarding a lucrative consultancy contract to a friend’s company. It was also revealed that procurement rules had been waived in more than 50 instances by the secretariat over three years, resulting in the suspension of discretionary funding from the British, New Zealand and Australian governments until it got its financial procedures in order. Baroness Scotland continues to deny the allegations.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the recently concluded audit clears Baroness Scotland of any wrongdoing.

She has denied the allegations.
