BILL TO CRIMINALIZE MARITAL RAPE IN THE BAHAMAS IS NOT ATTACK ON MARRIAGE

Bahamas Attorney General Ryan Pinder

September 20, 2022 | By Colin O. Jarrett |

“The Draft Bill to criminalize marital rape in The Bahamas is not an attack on marriage”.

This is the word from Attorney General Ryan Pinder as he fielded questions from journalists at a recent symposium at Breezes Resort on the proposed law.

The bill would repeal Section 3 of the current law by removing the words “who is not a spouse” from the definition of rape.  It was released for consultation.

Mr Pinder who gave a presentation on the Sexual Offences Amendment Bill, 2022, said “if you are sexually abusing your wife in the context of a marriage, then maybe you should not be married”.  The Bill also defines consent, indecent assault and aggravating circumstances.
