Black Opportunity Fund Launches Groundbreaking Survey to Empower Racialized Communities in Canada

TORONTO, Canada – In a bold initiative to understand and address the systemic barriers faced by racialized communities in Canada, the Black Opportunity Fund (BOF) has launched an ambitious research study titled “Assessing Social Capital.” This first-ever longitudinal survey aims to uncover how social networks contribute to career opportunities and success for racialized individuals, with a particular focus on Black Canadians.

The survey is a collaborative effort involving the Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora, York University School of Continuing Studies, Coalition of Innovation Leaders Against Racism (CILAR), and York TD Community Engagement Centre. Together, these organizations seek to redefine how social capital is understood, acquired, and sustained within these communities.

The study will gather data on participants’ experiences with educational and job support from their networks and communities. The insights gained will be crucial for informing future government policies and organizational programs designed to support the social mobility of racialized Canadians.

Participants in the study will help shape future policies and programs that address the unique challenges of accessing and leveraging social capital. The survey results will provide essential data to inform culturally relevant supports and help dismantle systemic barriers to social mobility.

As an incentive, participants will be entered into a draw for a chance to win one of 15 $100 gift cards. To take part in the survey, individuals can visit this link. Participants are also encouraged to read and sign the consent form before proceeding with the survey to ensure their rights are fully protected throughout the process.

For any questions or further information regarding the study, participants can reach out to the research team at jachair@edu.yorku.ca.

The “Assessing Social Capital” survey represents a critical opportunity to address the systemic inequities that have long hindered the progress of racialized communities in Canada. Through this groundbreaking research, the Black Opportunity Fund and its partners hope to pave the way for more equitable access to career opportunities, ultimately fostering greater social mobility and economic empowerment for all.
