Canada Implements Support Measures for Haitians Amidst Ongoing Crisis

Ottawa, Ontario – In response to the escalating security situation and humanitarian crisis in Haiti, the Government of Canada has announced a series of temporary measures aimed at supporting Haitian nationals both in Canada and those who have fled the country.

Effective May 23, 2024, Haitians with valid temporary resident status in Canada are now eligible to apply for study permits, open work permits, or status extensions at no cost. This includes family members of Canadian citizens or permanent residents who have left Haiti, as well as foreign national family members who arrived through assisted departures out of Haiti, regardless of their nationality.

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, emphasized the importance of these measures in ensuring the well-being and safety of those affected by the crisis. “We are deeply concerned for the well-being of people in Haiti,” Minister Miller stated. “The measures announced today will make it easier for family members of Canadians who fled Haiti to stay in Canada with their families, and enable Haitian nationals to work and study in a safe environment.”

In addition to facilitating access to education and employment opportunities, the Canadian government is also extending three months of Interim Federal Health Program coverage to eligible Haitian nationals in Canada. This coverage will provide essential healthcare services during their stay in Canada.

These temporary measures not only aim to alleviate the immediate challenges faced by Haitian nationals but also underscore Canada’s commitment to humanitarian efforts and upholding family unity. By providing a safe haven and support system, Canada continues to demonstrate solidarity with the people of Haiti during this tumultuous time.

For more information about eligibility and how to apply for these support measures, individuals are encouraged to visit the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

As the situation in Haiti continues to evolve, Canada remains committed to providing assistance and support to those in need, both within its borders and abroad. Stay tuned to Vision Newspaper – The Caribbean Update for further developments and updates on this important issue.
