Canada Supports Nigeria’s First Solar-Powered Medical Oxygen Plant

Ottawa, Canada — Canada is making strides in global healthcare innovation with the recent development of Nigeria’s first solar-powered medical oxygen plant. The announcement was made by Ahmed Hussen, Canada’s Minister of International Development, in a tweet on September 19, 2024, expressing pride in the milestone achieved through a Canadian-Nigerian partnership.

Built by EM-ONE Energy, a Canadian-Nigerian company, in collaboration with UNICEF, the plant will significantly improve access to life-saving oxygen in Nigerian healthcare facilities, especially in remote and underserved areas. Powered entirely by sustainable solar energy, this initiative addresses the critical need for reliable oxygen supplies, a major challenge in healthcare systems across many developing countries.

“Canada is powering change with the first solar-powered medical oxygen plant in Nigeria,” Hussen stated in his tweet. “This plant running on sustainable energy will improve access to critical healthcare.”

The project is a landmark achievement in the efforts to combat healthcare inequality, aligning with Canada’s commitment to global development. It highlights the role of Development Canada, which supported the initiative through funding and expertise aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Nigeria.

By integrating renewable energy solutions, the oxygen plant not only addresses medical needs but also reduces the carbon footprint of healthcare facilities. This is particularly vital in Nigeria, where power outages and fuel shortages often disrupt essential services like oxygen generation.

The collaboration between EM-ONE Energy and UNICEF emphasizes the importance of public-private partnerships in solving global challenges. This initiative is expected to expand to other regions of Nigeria, with potential future projects across Africa.

The solar-powered plant marks a significant step forward in both healthcare innovation and environmental sustainability, reflecting Canada’s growing influence in sustainable development efforts worldwide.
