Canada’s Ahmed Hussen Highlights Nation’s Commitment to Reproductive Health on World Contraception Day

Ottawa, Canada — On this year’s World Contraception Day, Minister of International Development Ahmed Hussen reaffirmed Canada’s dedication to reproductive health and equality through enhanced access to contraceptives, both at home and abroad.

In a tweet posted on September 26, 2024, Hussen announced Canada’s latest effort to make access to contraception a universal right. “Body autonomy and equality begin with access to contraception,” Hussen stated, emphasizing the nation’s core belief that everyone should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies.

Underlining this commitment, Canada recently made contraceptives free for its citizens. This step is part of a broader initiative to break down barriers and ensure that reproductive health services are accessible to all Canadians, regardless of their socioeconomic status. The move reflects Canada’s forward-thinking approach to body autonomy, gender equality, and public health.

Canada is also stepping up its efforts globally. Hussen revealed that the country has invested $112.5 million to support women’s health worldwide, underscoring the government’s recognition that access to contraception is a critical aspect of healthcare and gender equality. This funding will bolster programs aimed at improving maternal and reproductive health services in underprivileged regions, enabling millions of women and girls to exercise their right to choose.

As part of Canada’s ongoing efforts, this latest initiative seeks to ensure that body autonomy, gender equality, and health equity are not limited to national borders. With this global investment, Canada aims to provide essential support for reproductive health initiatives that empower women in developing countries, promoting both social and economic progress.

World Contraception Day, observed annually on September 26, serves as a platform for global action and awareness about the importance of contraception and reproductive health. Canada’s actions this year reaffirm its position as a global leader in advocating for body autonomy, health rights, and gender equality.
