Canadian Government House Leader Calls for Ceasefire in Gaza Amid Rising Civilian Death Toll

OTTAWA – Minister of Democratic Institutions and Government House Leader, Arielle Kayabaga, is calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as the humanitarian crisis worsens. In a statement posted on social media on March 19, Kayabaga described the situation as “devastating,” emphasizing the rising death toll, particularly among children.

“The loss of civilian lives is both tragic and unacceptable,” she wrote. “We must continue to call for a lasting ceasefire, the release of hostages, and uninterrupted humanitarian aid. Innocent civilians must be protected. Children’s lives must be valued.”

Her remarks come as international reports highlight the increasing number of casualties, with humanitarian organizations warning of severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies in Gaza. The United Nations and aid agencies have repeatedly called for an end to the violence and immediate humanitarian access to affected areas.

As a high-ranking member of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, Kayabaga’s statement underscores growing pressure on Canada’s leadership to take a stronger stance in advocating for peace. While Canada has expressed support for humanitarian efforts, activists and political figures continue to urge more decisive action.

Across the country, protests and advocacy groups have intensified their calls for Canada to push for a diplomatic resolution. Demonstrations in cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal have drawn thousands demanding an end to the hostilities and a greater commitment to humanitarian assistance.

The situation remains fluid, with international efforts to broker a ceasefire facing obstacles. However, Kayabaga’s call for urgent action reflects the sentiments of many Canadians seeking a resolution to the ongoing crisis.
