CaribbeanTales Closes With Mini-Series Traces-Eritaj

Awards Ceremony Recognizes Top Films of This Year’s Festival

The 17th annual CaribbeanTales Film Festival (CTFF) wraps up on Friday September 23rd with the Ontario premiere of Traces-Eritaj, directed by Vox Sambou and Yoktown’s at the Carlton Cinema, 20 Carlton Street, Toronto at 7:30PM EST. “It has been three weeks of the best content from the Caribbean and African diaspora, many with Canadian connections,” exclaimed Festival Director Diana Webley. “And we get to recognize, honour and celebrate these filmmakers and their creativity at our Closing Night Awards Ceremony.”

Traces-Eritaj (Traces and Heritages) is a mini-series that follows the journey of three Canadian musicians who travel to Haiti to partner with beat-maker Manno Beats and support a mobile clinic project in the mountains of Les Cayes.

For the past three weeks, CTFF has celebrated emerging and established filmmakers from the Caribbean and African Diaspora. The festival kicked off on September 7th with the premiere: Toronto Caribbean Carnival: Fun and Free and a talkback with director Irina Volkova and Dr. Rita Cox. The documentary showcased the history of Canada’s largest outdoor street festival.

On September 8th, the festival commemorated the 60th anniversary of Trinidad and Tobago’s independence with the feature Lavway: Our Story – the night was dedicated to the twin islands and its culture. On September 9th, a sold-out audience screened Steadfast: The Messenger and The Message, the uplifting story of The Honourable Jean Augustine, who celebrated her 85th birthday that night.

Ahead of Closing Night on September 23rd, there are three nights of films:

September 20th

  • Legacy of Bodies – directed by Dev Ramsawakh

  • Maria Kristu: The Buumba Story – directed by Paul S. Wilo

September 21st

  • Spirit Emulsion – directed by Siku Allooloo

  • Kunu (The Curse) – directed by Onias Landveld

  • Bakosó: AfroBeats of Cuba – directed by Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi

September 22nd

The Micro-Credentials night showcases 13 films in development from the CaribbeanTales Media Group’s Creator of Colours Incubator program.
