Cub Scouts Urged to Use Skills to Prepare for Life

“Activities that you participate in and the skills that you learn as Cub Scouts will follow you through the rest of your life. You will use them in various areas of your life and in various situations,” he said.

The Governor-General, who is Chief Scout for the island, was addressing the opening ceremony of the 15th Caribbean Cuboree held at the Ocho Rios High School in St. Ann on Tuesday (July 30).

The week-long camp also involves Cub Scouts from Suriname, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, and Aruba.

The Governor-General said that the event will help to “groom our young people to become the best versions of themselves and to make their contribution to the building of our nations”.

He encouraged the youngsters to stay true to the values and morals that they are being taught.

“Remember, always, the Scout oath and the promises you made, the 10 points of your Scout law and the motto ‘to do your best, as only your best is good enough’,” he said.

For his part, Minister of State for Education, Youth and Information, Hon. Alando Terrelonge, hailed the scout movement for helping to instil discipline among young men in particular

“So many of our young men are being raised without the requisite discipline to ensure that they play their part in nation-building, and so you (Cub Scouts) have a head start in learning what is truly means to be a… productive young man and what it means to make a valuable contribution, not just in your own life or in the life of your family,” he said.

The Scout Association provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for young people.

The Caribbean Cuboree is held every three years in countries across the region.

The week-long camp will see Cub Scouts engaging in various ‘cubbing’ and cultural exchange activities as well as excursions to visitor attractions across St. Ann.

The camp concludes on August 5.
