Dominican Republic judge orders transportation union leader held in murder investigation
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic _ A judge in the Dominican Republic has ordered the leader of a public transportation union held for one year while authorities investigate allegations of his involvement in several killings.
Police say Arsenio Quevedo is accused of planning and paying for the killing of at least three drivers following arguments with them in recent years. He also is accused of laundering fuel subsidies that his union received monthly.
Quevedo is expected to remain in jail as the investigation continues.
Also charged in the case is a local government official accused of overseeing a ring of hit men that police allege participated in the killings.
The ruling against Quevedo was issued Friday.
