Ex Canadian governor general, Michaelle Jean, to head bloc of mostly French speaking countries
DAKAR, Senegal _ A Canadian has been named secretary-general of the International Organization of the Francophonie, a group of mostly French-speaking countries, many of them former French colonies.
At a summit Sunday in Senegal, leaders from the bloc’s member-states selected Michaelle Jean, who will be the first woman to lead the organization.
Jean, who is originally from Haiti, is a former journalist and was Canada’s governor general _ the British queen’s representative in that country _ from 2005 to 2010.
At a news conference at the end of the summit, Jean promised to focus on economic co-operation to promote growth among the bloc’s members.
