Four prisoners have escaped from the Whithorn Police Station, in the Western End of Jamaica W.I. The parish of West-More-Land to be exact.

There have been at least five jail breaks since March 2015. “This is quite an embarrassment for (us) the police”, a highly placed source in the Police Force has disclosed to Vision’s SIC on condition of anonymity.

The DPP ruled in late December 2015 that five police officers be criminally charged for a similar jail break. There has been a dramatic increase in crime in the Western End of Jamaica, which is where tourists frequent most.

Gang Related Crimes

Tourists have not so far been targeted. Many tourists stay at all inclusive properties like Sandals and Moon Palace, formerly Jamaica Grande, which are well secured. There are others who mix with locals and stay at villas. Reports of attacks on tourists are minimal.

There seems to be a high level of gang related reprisal attacks … for turf and scamming related spoils. A number of arrests for these offences have been made. Convictions lag behind due mainly to lack of air tight evidence. Last data especially for scamming … points at 20 percent or 1 out of 5 of these arrests end up being convicted.
