Guyana seeks ex govt official accused of embezzlement
GEORGETOWN, Guyana _ The South American country of Guyana has requested that authorities in Canada arrest a former government official accused of embezzling money from the state-owned power company.
A police spokesman says Aeshwar Deonarine fled to Canada last year after he was accused of illegally raising his salary and stealing $150,000 from the power company where he worked as deputy chief executive. Spokesman Wendell Blanhum said Tuesday that police also have requested help from Interpol.
He said Deonarine had promised to return the money before fleeing.
Guyana has been cracking down on corruption in recent months as it pursues charges against high-ranking officials from the previous administration. One official recently was charged with stealing $3 million and several government vehicles.
