March 10, 2021 |Dr Colin O Jarrett |

Health, Education and Counselling Institute/HECOIN, the Polytechnic of the Caribbean, which has spread its wings beyond Caribbean, has kicked off its first online training nursing programme with overseas students recently.

LAUNCH, COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM & OLDEST REGISTERED PRACTICAL NURSING SCHOOL IN JAMAICA

The 32 year-old flagship institution in Jamaica and the Caribbean, launched its core nursing programme called Elderly Care/EC (formerly Geriatric Nursing) on March 2, 2021.  EC nurses provide bedside nursing to older persons in the population which is a growing area of specialization globally.  This first of learners include male and female not only from Jamaica, but from St Kitts and Nevis, Ghana and the United Kingdom.  The training will expose the international students to the comprehensive practical nursing curriculum written by its founding President/CEO, the late Dr. Clover P Jarrett who was a Nursing Educator par excellence.  This International Diploma Level 2 curriculum was the request of the Government of Jamaica for implementation as the national curriculum for Practical Nurses in the island of Jamaica.  HECOIN is the oldest registered practical nursing school in Jamaica and is highly recognized in the Caribbean and beyond.

FOUR FOR THE PRICE OF ONE

In addition, in 2012, the late founding president included other specialized areas in the curriculum to include care giving and nursing assistant.  Successful students will not only receive one course written on their diploma, but will include four:  Elderly Care Nursing, Geriatric Nursing, Nursing Assistant and Care Giving.  So instead of students paying independently for each course, they will pay for one and get the other three free of cost.  This is a COVID-19 special which will run for this calendar year.

AMCA & AAH U.S. INTERNATIONAL EXAMINATIONS

Upon successful completion of HECOIN’s EC and other health-care programmes, students are able to sit the American Medical Certifications Association/AMCA or the American Allied Health/AAH examinations, which are both national examinations, recognized in all 50 States.  These online assessments give test results in less than 10 minutes.  HECOIN is a proud testing site/Centre for these two internationally accrediting examination bodies.
