Jamaica and EU Deepen Security and Visa Cooperation in High-Level Talks

KINGSTON, JAMAICA – Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, met with Magnus Brunner, European Union Commissioner of Internal Affairs and Migration, for wide-ranging talks focused on deepening security cooperation and enhancing bilateral relations.

The meeting addressed several key issues, including:

  • Strengthening international coordination to combat transnational organized crime

  • Advancing security collaboration under the EU’s El Pacto initiative

  • Reviewing Jamaica’s progress in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (AML/CFT) following its removal from the FATF grey list

  • Exploring matters related to the Schengen Visa regime

“Our engagement was productive and reflective of the shared values, strong partnership, and fruitful engagement Jamaica and the EU have enjoyed for fifty years,” Minister Johnson Smith stated via X (formerly Twitter).

The meeting reaffirmed Jamaica’s strategic role in regional security and financial transparency, as well as its intent to expand mobility and economic opportunities through closer alignment with EU frameworks.

Both parties committed to further strengthening ties in the face of evolving global challenges, with Jamaica expressing optimism for enhanced cooperation across diplomatic, security, and migration-related fronts.
