Jamaica Extends Congratulations to Mexico on 214th Independence Anniversary

Kingston, Jamaica – Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, has extended warm congratulations to the Government and people of Mexico on the occasion of their 214th Independence Anniversary. The Minister’s message was conveyed during a reception held in honour of Mexico’s National Day at the residence of Mexican Ambassador to Jamaica, Juan José Gonzalez Maijares, on Friday, September 13, 2024.

Speaking at the event, Minister Johnson Smith emphasized the strong diplomatic relations between Jamaica and Mexico, noting that the two nations share a long history of cooperation and mutual respect. “The Government and people of Jamaica deeply value our enduring friendship with Mexico. As you celebrate this significant milestone, we look forward to strengthening the bonds of cooperation in trade, culture, and development,” she stated.

The reception, which was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, and other dignitaries, highlighted the close ties between both nations. Ambassador Maijares, in his remarks, expressed appreciation for the continued collaboration between Jamaica and Mexico, noting that the relationship is built on shared values and common goals in the region.

Mexico’s Independence Day marks the beginning of the country’s fight for freedom from Spanish rule, which commenced on September 16, 1810, under the leadership of Miguel Hidalgo. The celebration in Jamaica featured traditional Mexican music, food, and cultural performances, symbolizing the vibrant spirit of the Mexican people.

Minister Johnson Smith also used the occasion to reaffirm Jamaica’s commitment to fostering regional partnerships, particularly in light of the challenges facing the global community.

The event concluded with a toast to the continued friendship between Jamaica and Mexico, and to a future of even stronger collaboration between the two nations.
