KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Police commanders in Jamaica have ordered a “high-level probe” into allegations that an officer was fatally shot after staging an attempted robbery with an accomplice at a bar.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force on Sunday identified the dead constable as 25-year-old Kemar Beckford. He was attached to a police station in the western parish of Westmoreland.

Beckford was killed during an alleged robbery at a Hanover parish bar. A senior off-duty policeman fatally shot Beckford Saturday as he was allegedly threatening bar patrons with a gun and demanding money. He was allegedly masked at the time.

A car that was left idling outside the bar was seized and an accomplice apparently managed to flee.

An independent agency that probes abuse allegations against Jamaica‘s security forces is also investigating the incident.
