KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Authorities in Jamaica say they have seized nearly 900 pounds (408 kilograms) of marijuana in a suspected drugs-for-guns trade with Haiti.

Police said in a statement Monday that the drugs were seized over the weekend in the northern parish of St. Ann.

Authorities say the trade has flourished for years with Jamaicans receiving pistols and submachine guns in exchange for home-grown marijuana. Many of the illegal guns are made in the U.S. and begin their illegal journey from Florida.
