Jamaican Government Honors Third World Band at Grand Gala

Kingston, Jamaica — The Jamaica Government honored the iconic Third World Band at this year’s Grand Gala event, celebrating their extraordinary contributions to the music industry and their role in promoting Jamaican culture globally. The ceremony took place on August 6, 2024, at the National Stadium in Kingston, as part of Jamaica’s Independence Day festivities.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness praised the band for their exceptional artistry and dedication to reggae music, highlighting how Third World has carried the essence of Jamaica to audiences worldwide for over four decades.

Third World, formed in 1973, is known for their unique fusion of reggae, funk, pop, and rock, which has earned them a diverse international fan base. Hits like “96 Degrees in the Shade” and “Now That We Found Love” have become timeless anthems, solidifying the band’s legacy in the annals of reggae history.

The Grand Gala, a staple of Jamaica’s Independence celebrations, provided a fitting backdrop for the tribute. This year’s event was particularly poignant as the nation continues to rebuild and recover from the recent impact of Hurricane Beryl. The scaled-back yet spirited celebrations reflected the resilience and unity of the Jamaican people.

The Grand Gala featured a vibrant showcase of Jamaican culture, with performances from top artists, traditional dances, and a spectacular fireworks display. Despite the scaled-back nature of the festivities due to the hurricane’s aftermath, the event successfully captured the spirit of national pride and cultural richness.

As Jamaica marks another year of independence, the honoring of Third World serves as a reminder of the powerful role music plays in uniting and uplifting communities. The band’s legacy continues to inspire, proving that Jamaican music remains a force to be reckoned with on the global stage.
