Jamaica’s Independence Day Gift a Gold Medal at 4×100 Women’s Relay

Today the Caribbean island of Jamaica celebrates its 59th Independence Day.  It was 59 years ago today when Jamaica became an independent nation freeing itself from 300 years of British rule. This Independence Day is being celebrated with a special gift from the Jamaican women’s relay team competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The women’s relay team which includes Briana Williams, Elaine Thompson-Herah, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson won a gold medal at the 4×100 Women’s Relay track event.

Sprinter Briana Williams had a brilliant first leg of the relay passing the baton to the fastest woman alive Elaine Thompson-Herah.  Silver medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce took the 3rd leg and passed the baton to the 100 meter bronze medalist Shericka Jackson to complete the race achieving a new national record of 41.02 seconds.

Fraser-Pryce shared “We are so grateful to win this Gold Medal for Jamaica on national Independence Day.”

Jamaica was represented with a formidable team consisting of 100m and 200m gold medalist Elaine Thompson-Herah, silver medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and bronze medalist Sherika Jackson along side the 2018 100m/200m World Junior Champion Briana Williams.

The Nation of Jamaica celebrates these beautiful women, the “Golden Queens” with their outstanding achievements and wishes everyone a Happy Independence Day.
