Kenya Backs Global Cooperation to Enhance Climate Resilience

New York, USA – Kenya is reaffirming its commitment to global cooperation and resource mobilization aimed at strengthening climate resilience, particularly in developing countries. President William Samoei Ruto, PhD, emphasized this during a meeting with World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General Celeste Saulo on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In a tweet posted on September 25, 2024, President Ruto highlighted Kenya’s focus on improving the capacity of developing nations to better forecast, prepare for, and mitigate climate-related disasters. “Kenya supports global cooperation and resource mobilisation to enhance climate resilience to bolster the ability of developing countries to forecast, prepare for and mitigate climate-related disasters,” he wrote.

The meeting with Secretary-General Saulo underscores Kenya’s strategic role in addressing climate challenges, particularly as the African continent faces increasing threats from extreme weather conditions such as droughts, floods, and storms. Climate change remains a top priority for Kenya, with the country already rolling out several initiatives aimed at transitioning to a green economy and improving its capacity for climate adaptation and mitigation.

Kenya’s efforts to enhance climate resilience align with global calls for more inclusive strategies to tackle climate change, especially in nations that are disproportionately affected by its impacts but have fewer resources to respond.

As President Ruto continues to champion climate action on the international stage, Kenya’s leadership is expected to be pivotal in advancing partnerships that can deliver both technical and financial support for climate-vulnerable regions.

This meeting builds on Kenya’s long-standing advocacy for sustainable development and resilience-building measures, which have been at the forefront of Ruto’s policy agenda since his tenure began.
