Kenyan-Led Security Mission in Haiti Gains Momentum, Ruto Prepares for UN Engagement

Kenya – Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to stabilizing Haiti, as the Multinational Security Support Mission, led by Kenya and backed by the United Nations Security Council, continues to make headway in the Caribbean nation. In a post on social media on September 22, 2024, President Ruto highlighted the mission’s success in restoring hope for a stable and prosperous Haiti.

“The Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission for Haiti, backed by the United Nations Security Council, continues to yield positive results, restoring hope to the people of the Caribbean nation for a stable and prosperous country,” Ruto tweeted.

During his visit to Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, Ruto met with Kenyan police officers who are part of the peacekeeping mission and announced plans to deploy 600 more officers to bolster efforts. The additional reinforcements will support ongoing operations to maintain security, combat gang violence, and provide stability in key areas across Haiti.

In his engagements with the Transitional Presidential Council led by President Edgard Le Leblanc and other key stakeholders, Ruto stressed the importance of leveraging the current calm to drive progressive changes and build a future for Haiti. “I have urged them to take advantage of this relative calm to drive the momentum for progressive change,” he added.

The Security Mission in Haiti follows the adoption of the UN Security Council’s Resolution 2699, which authorized Kenya’s leadership in coordinating international efforts to assist Haiti. President Ruto noted that this moment of relative peace offers a unique opportunity for the Haitian authorities and international community to fully implement the mandate outlined by the UN.

Ruto will carry this message to the global stage at the United Nations General Assembly this week, where he is set to address world leaders on Haiti’s situation and the progress made. He underscored the urgency of the situation in Haiti and called for the international community to seize the opportunity created in recent weeks to fulfill the mandate of the resolution.

This mission marks a significant moment for Kenya on the international stage as it leads efforts to restore peace and stability in Haiti, aligning with the broader UN goal of global peacekeeping. With the upcoming UN General Assembly engagement, Ruto is poised to strengthen international collaboration on Haiti and solidify Kenya’s role in the global security landscape.

As the situation in Haiti continues to improve, there is optimism that these coordinated efforts will lay the groundwork for a brighter, more secure future for the Haitian people.
