Kimiela ‘Candy’ Isaacs Inspires More Female Participation in JCDC Festival Song Competition

Kingston, Jamaica — Kimiela ‘Candy’ Isaacs, the 2024 Jamaica Festival Song Competition winner, is calling on more women to step up and showcase their talents in the prestigious event organized by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC). Isaacs, who secured the top spot with her empowering entry “#OneJamaica,” is urging women to seize the opportunity and represent their country in the competition.

This year’s festival marked a historic milestone with an unprecedented number of female finalists. For the first time in the competition’s 58-year history, six women were among the ten finalists, outnumbering their male counterparts. This surge in female representation highlights a significant shift towards inclusivity and equality in the event.

Isaacs, who is visually impaired, expressed her enthusiasm about the increased female presence. “Come out and represent your country. The competition is not a man-based thing. It is neutral… women and men. So, women come on out, step up to the game, go for it,” she declared. Her victory with “#OneJamaica” not only underscores her musical talent but also serves as a powerful message encouraging women to take their place in the spotlight.

The competition’s finals, held on July 13, saw Trishmaq securing the first runner-up position with her song “Jamaica is a Big Brand.” Sister Novelette followed as the second runner-up with her entry “Fi Mi Island Home.” The event was a celebration of Jamaican culture and music, showcasing the diverse and vibrant talents within the island’s music scene.

Isaacs’ triumph is a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication. Her message resonates with many, reinforcing the idea that the Festival Song Competition is an inclusive platform where all voices can be heard. As the festival continues to evolve, the increased participation of female artists is expected to bring fresh perspectives and creativity to the competition.
