Mexico’s Giovani dos Santos scores a goal in his LA Galaxy debut in CONCACAF Champions League

CARSON, Calif. (AP)_ Mexican star Giovani dos Santos scored in his debut for the LA Galaxy in a 5-1 victory over Trinidad and Tobago‘s Central FC in their CONCACAF Champions League group opener.

Dos Santos came on as a second-half substitute and scored in the 76th minute, banking a shot off the right post after excellent setup work from Sebastian Lletget and Rafael Garcia.

The Galaxy signed dos Santos last month, and he began training with the defending MLS champions this week. He spent the past two seasons with Villareal in Spain’s La Liga.

Dos Santos will make his MLS debut Sunday at home against Seattle alongside Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard, who both skipped Thursday’s game. Dos Santos has played for Mexico in two World Cup tournaments during nine years with El Tri.

Gyasi Zardes scored on a penalty kick and had two assists, and Alan Gordon, Raul Mendiola and Ignacio Maganto also scored for the Galaxy. Ataulla Guerra scored for Central.

Comunicaciones of Guatemala also is in the three-team group.
