OAS rights commission asks Bahamas to respond to claims of mistreatment of migrants

NASSAU, Bahamas _ An organization that monitors human rights in the Western Hemisphere has asked the Bahamas to respond to allegations that migrants have been mistreated at its main detention centre.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights made the request based on reports from non-governmental organizations about conditions at the Carmichael Road Detention Center.

The NGOs reported that men, women and children were held in overcrowded conditions without access to sufficient food and other necessities. Many people were forced to sleep on the floor and not granted access to relatives or legal services. The IACHR resolution was released Thursday.

The NGOs visited after the Bahamas tightened immigration rules in November.

The Bahamas government said Friday that many of the concerns were “overstated and inaccurate” but a formal response would be sent later.
