Obituary: Tribute for Mr. Peter Munk

It is with regret that we pay tribute and hereby place on the record, the passing of an outstanding entrepreneur, a Canadian/ Hungarian, Mr. Peter Munk who ran away from Nazi occupation when Poland was invaded by the Nazis. He fled to Canada at age 20. He entered business and donated $300 million as he succeeded financially. Munk establish through his philanthropic donations, among which has been “The Peter Munk Cardiac Centre.” to name a few of his distinguished and vast legacy of note.

Rocky

Things never always went smooth for this outstanding, determined fighter who stuck to his guns.  The road was rocky at times as several of his start up businesses failed, but he never threw in the towel readily.  His successes were many and his legacy in his beloved adopted country Canada is an example of inspiration to all.

Engineer

We applaud this philanthropist for his altruism. A Hungarian by  birth who became an electrical engineer, educated in Canada. Munk praised Canada for what the country did for him.

Personal Life

Peter Munk was married twice and sired 5 children. Three from his first marriage and two from the second. At 70 he was fitted with a pacemaker.  He lived 20 years after such a life changing surgical intervention.

Business

Founder and Chairman of Berrick Mines. The world’s largest gold mine. He was involved in many other businesses and chaired numerous boards in the corporate world.

Awards

Peter Munk received numerous citations, awards and Honorary Doctorate degrees including the Order of Canada in the Commander class.  Hungary, his native land also honoured him.

Dr. Peter Munk died March 28, 2018 … today at 90.

Commentary

Dr. Munk came to Canada with very little, not speaking English, yet he made it big. Donated over 300 million to charitable causes. We salute you sir.
