The PM Hon. Andrew Michael Holness in his annual budget presentation, the 6th so far for him, was just short of (4) four hours in length.  His marathon address to the Jamaican Parliament was wide ranging and covered among other areas environmental protection issues.

Diana McCauley, a noted Environmentalist spoke to Tauna Thomas and Danielle Archer on “This Morning” on Nationwide News Network (NNN) regarding comments made by the Prime Minister Andrew Holness in his 2021/22 budget presentation. Ms. McCauley was asked to react to what the PM had to say. .

DMc: “The Protected Area”  plan is a good idea, the last time I heard this was 1991. . my main concern is how long this will take to get implemented. We did not hear of the 15 areas to be so protected, so I am unable to comment on same.  The plan to acquire lands or to purchase private lands or manage same is a good move only if it does not create more challenges.  For example the bypass for Montego as a development is good, but unfortunately a leg will take out a large amount of mangroves.  The Cockpit Country should be at the top of the list as this is a watershed which is crucial for residents, must be protected.”

Portland Blight

DMc: “Some sections are functional,  but, where parts of these areas are not protected or damaged they will be in need of restoration.  For Example Portland Blight protected area readily comes to mind.”

Continuing Ms. McCauley said:

DMc: “The Montego Bay ocean recreation plan is a good idea as people could be educated which is important, if mangroves are to be destroyed as in the  case of the Montego bypass highway then this would not be good.”

DMc: “Puerto Bello mountain permit can be withdrawn.”

TT: ” Are you saying no development can be done there?”

DMc: “Restoration is never too late. The performance bond is about to expire in addition,  please bear in mind that the matter is still before the courts.”

Perspective

Portmore Town Centre Park

The PM announced that this 14 acre plot of land located in the centre of the Portmore Municipal area is to be developed.  Some 270, 000 persons reside there.  This development has been long in the planning. We welcome the development of green areas.  People need spaces for recreation and exercise. It is good for the health of a community.  This is not only environmentally desirable, but  is the right thing to do. Enough said. What is your perspective? This is ours.
