President Museveni Breaks Ground for Bunyoro Public University, Calls for Free Education Implementation

Buhimba, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, accompanied by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni, joined leaders and residents of Bunyoro for the groundbreaking ceremony of Bunyoro Public University in Buhimba. The event marked a significant step toward expanding higher education opportunities in the region.

During the ceremony, President Museveni expressed gratitude to Canon Dr. Henry Wamani and his family for their patriotic gesture of donating 100 acres of land to facilitate the construction of the university. The institution is expected to boost education and development in the Bunyoro sub-region, which has been striving for increased access to higher learning institutions.

In a follow-up message, President Museveni addressed the issue of access to education, emphasizing the need for free schooling in government institutions. He urged the people of Bunyoro to advocate for the full implementation of free education policies to ensure that children from poor families can complete their studies and eventually enroll in the new university.

“If families are still poor, children will drop out of school. If they drop out, who will attend this university?” President Museveni questioned, highlighting concerns that students from other regions might end up benefitting more if local children are unable to complete their primary and secondary education due to financial constraints.

The president underscored the importance of tackling school fees charges in government institutions and encouraged the community to insist on accessible education. He noted that while wealthy families can afford private education, those from underprivileged backgrounds should not be left without an opportunity to pursue learning.

The establishment of Bunyoro Public University aligns with Uganda’s broader strategy to enhance educational access and regional development. The government continues to push for initiatives that support equitable education, aiming to reduce dropout rates and ensure that all children have a fair chance at academic advancement.

Local leaders and education stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, seeing it as a transformative milestone for Bunyoro. The construction of the university is expected to progress in phases, with the government and partners working to equip the institution with necessary infrastructure and academic programs.
