Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, about the global recovery from the economic impacts of COVID-19.
The three leaders reiterated their commitment to a collaborative global approach to fighting COVID-19. They also spoke about the importance of building back better to ensure a strong economic recovery that benefits everyone. They discussed the pandemic’s devastating impacts on the economies of vulnerable and developing countries, particularly with respect to debt and liquidity issues. They noted the unique challenges faced by small island economies, which are also highly susceptible to climate change and natural disasters. They agreed on the importance of safe and effective vaccines, and of getting people vaccinated as quickly as possible.
The leaders reaffirmed the need for strong international cooperation on financing for development, including through their co-leadership of the upcoming high-level meeting on International Debt Architecture and Liquidity at the United Nations on March 29.
